The State of Black El Paso: Catalyzing Transformative Change Through Exemplary LeadershipThe State of Black El Paso:

June 8, 2024 by BEPV Staff

The journey towards sustainable progress and equity for the Black community is not a leisurely stroll but a race against time. It requires a paradigm shift – one that emanates FROM WITHIN and spreads outward through the embodiment of exemplary leadership.

Mere rhetoric and passive engagement will not suffice to dismantle the insidious barriers that have historically impeded our collective advancement. We must step up as change agents, not just beacons of excellence, but ACTIVE forces that dismantle these barriers and pave a new path. Our determination is the key to our success.

We must cultivate a generation of Black leaders who are intellectually formidable and possess an unwavering commitment to ethical conduct, resilience, and steadfast determination. These pioneers should relentlessly pursue academic and professional excellence, using their achievements to shatter stereotypes and defy societal boundaries, thereby transforming our community.

Moreover, our leaders must embrace a spirit of service, recognizing that actual progress is achieved through uplifting and empowering our communities. They must be catalysts for positive transformation, encouraging our youth while addressing the systemic inequities hindering our mutual betterment. It is our responsibility to uplift our communities.

By embodying these principles and leading by example, we can inspire a renaissance of Black excellence that transcends boundaries and inspires future generations.

Juneteenth: Gentle Reminder About Freedom Day

June 8, 2024 by BEPV Staff

Welcome to Juneteenth, a journey toward enlightenment, empathy, and empowerment. Although this journal only scratches the surface, it is a starting point in our mission to educate our borderland community about the purpose of this commemoration. Juneteenth, derived from the words “June” and “nineteenth,” holds tremendous significance as the oldest known observance of the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. We gather, hoping to embrace unity and togetherness within our community.

On June 19, 1865 — over two years after President Lincoln declared all enslaved persons free — Major General Gordon Granger and Union Army troops marched to Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation and free the last enslaved Black Americans in Texas. On April 8, 1864, the Senate passed Amendment XIII of the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, with the exception of its use as a punishment for a crime. Subsequently, on January 31, 1865, the House of Representatives approved the amendment. Finally, on December 6, 1865, 27 of the then-36 states ratified the amendment. The amendment was proclaimed on December 18, solidifying its significance.

Various names for Juneteenth exist, to include Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day, Black Independence Day, the 2nd Independence Day, and Emancipation Day. It is an observance that became a national holiday on June 17, 2021, after President Biden signed legislation making June 19th a federal holiday, commemorating the emancipation of those once enslaved in the United States and beyond its borders.

While Juneteenth has been celebrated in El Paso for many years; however, in 2022, the founder of Black El Paso Voice gathered supporters to establish the official Juneteenth El Paso Initiative to actively and effectively observe Juneteenth. One of the goals was to include local government and ensure a family friendly celebration. Reaching out to Pablo Caballero at El Paso Parks & Recreation propelled the movement to make the Juneteenth celebration a citywide educational, fun-filled, and memorable event, reflective of the various ways it was celebrated in Galveston in 1865. To ensure successful collaboration, we contacted District 2 City Representative Alexsandra Annello to assist in actualizing a more inclusive and multicultural observance. The rest is history and the beginning of what we believe to be the example of community unity embracing Black American culture and educating the borderland about the importance of the observance of Juneteenth through education.

As residents of our great border city, our goal is to educate, celebrate, and uplift the history and progress of Black people in the United States, specifically the American Descendants of US Chattel Slavery. Unfortunately, The noble endeavor of educating the community about Black history is often met with derision and scorn, undermining the vital work of honoring and acknowledging the profound contributions and struggles of the Black community. Including our stories in the conversation about this country’s history has become increasingly challenging, but we will continue to change the narrative by educating the community.

Achieving this requires the support of our local community and government. We embody the founder’s mission to unite Black El Pasoans and exemplify that we are stronger as we strive for inclusivity within our community. We thrive, united in our collective growth, as we empower and uplift each other.

Rather than referring to non-Black community supporters as allies, we prefer the term: champions – who, along with us, embrace equality, equity, and the elevation of all people, regardless of our diverse beliefs, while ensuring Black Americans and our experiences are not forgotten or minimized. We aim to move our local community and country forward by positively advancing unity and understanding among all its citizens.

Remember, Juneteenth is not merely a one-day event but an ongoing observance of realized freedom. The fight for equality and justice is continuous, and we must remain vigilant in upholding these principles.

Your celebration of Juneteenth should not be exploitive in nature.

Utilize the official Juneteenth flag. (Click here for more information on the official flag.)

Defying ridicule, we illuminate Black history’s profound significance and will forever humanize slavery.

Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony Celebrated in El Paso

June 8, 2024 by BEPV Staff

El Paso, TX – June 8, 2024

Saturday at 8 a.m., the Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony took place at the historic McCall Neighborhood Center, marking a significant moment for the El Paso community. Juneteenth El Paso and Black El Paso Voice organized the event, bringing together residents to honor this pivotal day in American history.

The ceremony commenced with the El Paso Buffalo Soldiers Motorcycle Club hoisting the Juneteenth flag alongside the U.S. flag, accompanied by the stirring sounds of the reveille. This symbolic act underscored the unity and progress represented by the Juneteenth holiday, commemorating enslaved Black Americans’ emancipation in the United States.

Monica, the founder of Black El Paso Voice, addressed the attendees, sharing the profound significance of the Juneteenth flag. She emphasized the importance of the flag’s design and the official branding, which was hard-won and represents the challenges and achievements of the Black community. Monica’s words inspired the community to embrace and utilize this powerful symbol in their celebrations and commemorations, filling them with a sense of pride and inspiration.

Following her speech, local singer Abeni Janae sang a rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the Black National Anthem. Her performance resonated with the crowd, adding a poignant and uplifting note to the ceremony.

The Juneteenth Flag Raising Ceremony at the McCall Neighborhood Center celebrated freedom and heritage and fostered a sense of community and collective memory. As El Paso moves forward, events like these serve as essential reminders of the significance of unity, recognition, and celebration of diverse histories.

The community is invited tothe city’s official celebration, hosted by Black El Paso Voice and the City of El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, June 15, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

Juneteenth: The Meaning of the Flag

May 27, 2024 by BEPV Staff

The Juneteenth flag was created in 1997 by activist Ben Haith aka Boston Ben, founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation (NJCF). Boston-based illustrator Lisa Jeanne Graf brought Haith’s vision to life. Also contributing were Verlene Hines, Azim, and Eliot Design. The Juneteenth flag was revised in 2000 to include “June 19, 1865,” the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were freed.

The Juneteenth flag is a powerful symbol of freedom and justice for Black Americans, and it has become a symbol of Black emancipation in the United States of North America, the journey our ancestors have taken, and the continuous journey we are taking. We have work to do.

ABOUT THE COLORS: WE ARE FREE U.S. AMERICANS

Mr. Haith was intentional about every aspect of the creation.

  • The arc on the Juneteenth flag represents a new horizon, meaning fresh opportunities and promising futures for Black Americans.
  • The star represents Texas – Juneteenth started in Galveston. It represents the freedom of Black Americans in all 50 states.
  • The burst (zig-zag shape surrounding the star) represents Black Americans’ journey to achieve freedom. Inspired by a nova, the burst symbol represents the term astronomers use to mean a new star – in essence, a new beginning.
  • The colors of the flag represent the United States of America. The flag is a reminder that enslaved people and the descendants of enslaved people were AND ARE Americans. Those colors are a testament that Americans are committed to striving for actualization of liberty and justice for all.

The Black Roundtable and FBI El Paso

November 8, 2023 by BEPV Staff

The El Paso FBI Black Leaders Roundtable, established in March 2022, is a crucial platform for discussions on matters impacting the Black community and law enforcement to enhance their relationship. This initiative emerged from the collaborative efforts of Monica Tucker, the founder of The El Paso Black Roundtable, and FBI Special Agent Jeanette Harper.

The genesis of this collaboration traces back to 2019 when SA Harper engaged local Black media to feature the celebration of 100 Years of Black FBI Agents. During Black History Month in 2020, Black El Paso Voice showcased this feature.

In September 2021, a remarkable initiative called “First Fridays with the FBI” was launched by dedicated civilians in the El Paso community. This innovative program raises awareness about crimes and their prevention, inviting residents to promote safety and security within their neighborhoods actively. “First Fridays with the FBI” quickly gained momentum, drawing in community members from all walks of life, eager to collaborate with law enforcement agencies. This grassroots movement became integral to the ongoing efforts to strengthen the bridge between law enforcement and the public. Through engaging events and informative and open dialogues, this initiative empowered citizens with knowledge about crime prevention strategies, encouraging them to safeguard their communities actively.

Recognizing the immense value of this citizen-led initiative, the El Paso FBI Black Leaders Roundtable embraced the “First Fridays with the FBI” program as an essential component of their collaborative efforts. The Roundtable provided a supportive platform for the initiative, amplifying its impact and outreach. The partnership between the Roundtable and “First Fridays with the FBI” exemplifies the community’s dedication to fostering a safer environment through education, awareness, and proactive involvement. Together, these endeavors have contributed significantly to building a resilient community where law enforcement and citizens work hand in hand to prevent crimes, enhance security, and create a better future for all.

Building upon this success, SAC Downey, the former El Paso Field Office SAIC, recognized the need to expand these efforts and subsequently established similar demographic Roundtables inspired by the Black Leaders Roundtable.

Central to the Roundtable’s success is the appointment of Curtis Smith as the lead liaison between FBI El Paso and The Black Roundtable. This strategic role ensures effective communication and collaboration between the law enforcement agency and the Black community. The Roundtable is a vital platform where Black community leaders and law enforcement officials collaborate, fostering trust, dispelling misconceptions, and nurturing transparent relationships.

Additionally, the Roundtable serves as a forum for addressing shared concerns and devising strategies to tackle them collaboratively. Looking ahead, the Black Leaders Roundtable is committed to broadening its reach by connecting with other multicultural organizations and convening annually. Monica Tucker and SA Harper have established an impactful program that has significantly strengthened the ties between the Black community and law enforcement in El Paso.

Don’t hesitate to contact Monica Tucker or Curtis Smith for those interested in participating in the Black Roundtable. Your involvement is crucial to our shared mission of promoting understanding, trust, and collaboration between the Black community and law enforcement in El Paso.
